197 car oil/"snoWheeling"/and some SOO...
Author: Forever-Railfan-45

On Febaruary 10, 2019 NS ran another "land barge" AKA as 66X; 26,500 tons, 197 loads, and 12,500 feet long. A 2X2X1 configuration. CP 8012 should have led but they left it back in Mansfield, Ohio as she developed some "issues." First three pictures are of the 66X taken at PC 91.1 just outside of Louisville, Ohio. BNSF/CP were the midtrain helpers. The crew was overheard talking about how these trains are getting too heavy and too long. Engineer was in notch eight and felt like they were running in space...NS has been using the 1180 as the C51 helper on ethanol/oil trains coming out of Mansfield...

Numbers four and five are of the Wheeling and  Lake Erie 213 seen from the Ohio route 62 overpass between Brewster and Navarre, Ohio. I was hoping the snow was going to stick around for a little bit longer but the temperature rose quicker than I thought. Number six is of the 213 pulling into east end of Brewster yard...

Numbers seven and eight are of the 6K4 seen at the crest of CP Big Run, PC 133 on the Fort Wayne Line in Wooster, Ohio. This train had some issues as the third locomotive, SD60 died, therefore requiring NS to call C51 helper. She arrived at Mansfield Yard at 1140; she did not leave until 1515 hours.  IF it was not for the reporting marks of the leasing company, below the windows of the locomitive, this photo could pass for one over ten years ago maybe even longer when SOO units were still running around without leasing marks. Have a good Friday all...

Did the NS train (66X) travel the CF&E (former PRR) the whole way from Chicago?

Also, does the 2x2x1 DPU set up stay in that configuration all the way to destination? (I think the 66X goes to Reybold, DE via Amtrak's Northeast Corridor).

Thank you in advance.

As far as I know yes it did travel that way from Chicago. Destination was Reybold, DE.  The 2X2X1 was also yes until Altoona after that I do not know.  This was the second land barge NS has sent this way.

Good photos. I especially like photo one with the signals in the background.

Wow. Where does NS put that together? In Chicago the handoff from BNSF is at Ashland Ave or whatever the specific name is, which has a couple sidings but I'm guessing BNSF wouldn't be combining that into a monster there. So where could NS assemble it with the capacity to do so? How long would they hold a first train to wait to combine it with a second?

Running a 197 car loaded oil train is, IMHO, completely nuts. I can't even imagine the bad press NS would get if one of those monsters derailed and caught fire.

Does the FRA or STB care??

NS better be careful running those type of trains over horseshoe. Glad they put three helper sets on it.
