CSX First Responders & Veterans
Author: jbrailkentucky

My CSX source said the word on the street is that CSX will be painting a unit for military appreciation and another for first responders appreciation.

I hope you're right in that they paint a whole unit instead of just slapping a sticker on the side of a random HTM blue GEVO's nose...

With EHH gone, and NS doing Veterans and First Responders (6920, 9-1-1, and 5642) along with KCS doing veterans unit I would not be surprised, howwever with the new CEO being under EHH, id say rumor until its actually really confirmed.  Some railroad sources cant be trusted.  I know from expierence with a few.

I'm curious: why the "hate" toward CSX's so called "sticker units"? If not for Wick Moorman, NS never would have done their 20 heritage painted units. CSX doesn't HAVE to do anything to commemorate its predecessor roads. Personally, I'm grateful for the effort they put forth with ET44AC 3415; I hope they do more such units in the future. Sure, full blown heritage schemes would be nice, but CSX chooses to do other things, very nice things, like the C&O caboose for Kentucky Steam Heritage, various "heritage" painted cabooses (EL, B&OCT, B&O and Chessie come to mind), the repainting and donation of the Chessie B30-7, the repainting and donation of the C&O SD40, the repainting of CRR 800, and various other donations too numerous to mention. I appreciate the often derided "sticker units" as much as I do the great things CSX has done in the preservation field outlined above.

A minor correction----the B&OCT caboose was a project by a local employee and was never officially sanctioned by the carrier.

As was the Erie caboose that resides in Marion, OH. That project was spearheaded by a local employee as well...

Because putting just stickers on locos require little thought...(not trying to start a flaming war here, just saying).

It ties into an old expression:

"If your going to do a job, do it right the first time."

I like some of the other projects that CSX has been part of, but I also don't like the sticker units...

I'm a big CSX fan and always have been... (even though it replaced Chessie System)

That being said, the CSX "sticker" units are a slap in the face to the idea of heritage units...   They are a cheap, IMHO half-baked, idea that any other railroad could have and would have done better.  I personnaly do not consider them to be heritage units and prefer the Spirit units.    BTW, when an employee can have a decals made and do up a sticker heritage unit on his own better than what CSX planned then that says something about that railroad's actual effort.

I hope CSX does do the units. The stickers are just plain cheap.
I've seen the units with the stickers, but how do you even begin to photograph them unless they are sitting?

If NS can do this, why can't CSX splash a little paint around.

My 2 cents.

Same for a CSX caboose painted back into B&O colors in Ohio.   CSX employee took the charge of the paint restoration and did a great job on it.   The crew for the local took great pride it in.   However a new crewman did something to flatten the wheels by mistake, so its more of a display item I believe right now.

Terrific! Now that its leaking out, I suppose CSX can kill it now. Thanks!

I get it--I'm the one voice in the wilderness. Look here on TO for pictures of CSX 3415--this latest unit, with its large decal, seems to photograph very nicely.

I'm grateful for what CSX has done for railway preservation, and the Huntington paint booth has outdone itself with the F7, SD40, and B30-7 they painted recently... But for both the spirit and sticker units, honestly they just shouldn't have even bothered... Neither are particularly special for any reason IMO...
