SD70ACC versus SD70ACe
Author: Lackawanna484

Any thoughts from people who operate or maintain them about these two variations of the venerable SD70 locomotive?

Pulling power, reliability, cab interior comfort, noise, etc

Curious about this myself. Thank you.

What's the SD-70ACC model?  Is that the new one with the 4-stroke engine?

NS only model so far. It's a SD70 that has been converted to AC traction using the Mitsubishi electrical hardware of the SD70ACe. It also has a new isolated cab installed. I suspect there's no reason why other DC SD70M models couldn't be converted as well.

As long as you're not comparing it to one of those rattle trap early ACes they should be comparable.

Out

I'm just a foamer forwarding what I've heard from railroaders, but I've heard the cabs of the AC44C6Ms are horribly loud... Hopefully the SD70ACCs are better to ride in... They CERTAINLY aren't better to look at than standard-cab SD70s; the 1800-series rebuilds are so ugly they make the SD60Es look pretty...

Yes, very very loud. Which is very unusual for normally quiet GE power (ET44AC are damn near silent) . Most of the noise seems to come from the nose of the unit, like GE never stuck any sound deadening down there. CP AC44CWM units have the same exact problem.

I'd actually go as far as saying the C6M/CWM units are louder in the cab than the non-isolated cab SD70M-2/SD70ACe, early SD60E, even many standard cab EMDs.

To each their own. I like the look of the 1800's. The sloped, tear drop windshield looks nice compared to the SD70Ace.

Totally agree, and from a crew standpoint you do not get the nasty glare and reflections that the SD70ACe cab is known for.

We get the C6M's pretty regularly on our assigned trains. The newer 4000's and 4100's don't seem any louder than the 3600's and the 8100's. They're all pretty comparable.
