Waking up from Winter Nap
Author: MEKoch

Yesterday we 'woke' up 471 at the Orrville (OH) Railroad Heritage Society.  About the middle of November we put the loco to sleep, draining the water.   First we upcapped the exhaust stacks.  Discovered a small water leak around the dynamic brake.  Yesterday we refilled the water system.  Then pumped in about 50 gallons of lube oil.  We opened up the engine lids to observe the cams and valves.  Opened the cylinder pressure valves.  Opened the covers outside the cylinders, which allowed us to look over each cylinder, and see that oil was pumping through the cams, pistons, and crankshaft.  We have a very experienced mechanic directing all of us rookies in the process.  After reversing the above examination steps, our 645 engine was ready to start.  It purred to life quickly!!   We gave it some exercise moving cars back and forth.

Nice!  Glad you have a little area to shuffle cars around.   Miss the Medina trips.

I am not sure of its origins, but Amtrak owned it at one point, and installed a 645 engine in it.
