ALLEN Date: 05/09/19 05:59 Re: B&O Lake Branch Swine Creek Bridge near Middlefield Ohio = 5/ Author: cr7998 Last revenue train on the B&O Lake Branch was in 1981, rails pulled up in 1982. It once handled heavy coal and ore tonnage at the docks at Fairport Harbor. The ancient coal and ore docks were gone by the late 1960s, taking away the heaviest traffic, but service continued, primarily interchange with the Fairport, Painesville & Eastern (FP&E) that served the large Diamond Alkali (later Diamond Shamrock) chemical plant at Painesville. The closure of the Lake Branch was inevitable once Diamond Shamrock annouced the closing of the chemical plant in 1976. Chemical production ended that year, although the coke plant and concrete plant on the Diamond Shamrock property remained in operation for a few years beyond 1976. Last day of operation on the Lake Branch was October 31, 1981.
