WNYP Retiring 6 Axle ALCO's
Author: Ohiorailfan

I am just the messenger here, but I've seen on a few post on facebook that WNYP is soon retiring the 6 axle ALCO's in favor of Ex CSX AC44/60CW's. Not sure how true it is and could just be the normal railfan rumor. Anyone have any thoughts or further information on this? Apparently 1 6 axle has already been sold to the DL.

If true, it does not surprise me. There are PLENTY of them available, cheap.

I had just heard from a mechanic there that those engines are in pristine condition, parts are plentiful, and they are some of the best running engines they've seen.

The Morristown & Erie experience with their C430 units was very positive.  Very economical with fuel, compared to the EMD unit on the property back then.

Are the WNY&P C430 units in service now?

To which engines are you referring? The CSX castoffs?

Since when did CSX have six axle ALCOs that they sold off? I'm referring to the locomotives this post is about.

The initial post mentions both the six-axle Alcos that WNYP currently has and the rumored ex-CSX GEs that the person says WNYP is getting. You could have been referring to either, assuming that whatever mechanic you spoke with had inspected anything WNYP was kicking the tires on. Alco/MLW parts may be "plentiful" but parts for 20-year-old GEs are even moreso, and frankly I'd be interested to know where the Alco/MLW Parts Reserve is located if it exists.

I hope this rumor is wrong, but it's very credible (and just backed up to me by a very knowledgeable person who PM'd me), and I just hope that if it's true, that at least the new GE fleet comes painted in WNYP colors rather than looking like Pan Am Western.
