3 RDCs on the Reading & Northern; 5/18/19
Author: warren1977

With approximately 175 customers on board, the "Three Rivers Flyer" excursion sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Chapter, NRHS, and its affiliated group, RR Historians of the Lehigh Valley, departed Port Clinton,PA. @ 9a.m. The 3 RDCs were on their first trip as a trio, with #9167 being added.
A mix of stationary and moving photo opportunities were offered, with the first at Independence (former M&H Jct.), very deep in the Lehigh Gorge.
Other stops were just south of Tannery, at the North end of the gorge, and at White Haven, where a stop was made to load lunches by the former Lehigh Valley engine house that was converted into a library. Unfortunately the building was closed for renovations.
After the climb over the mountain to Pittston, a set of runbys were done at Pittston wye, when #9167 suffered an electrical issue and refused to go in reverse.
About 2 hours were required to get #9167 going again, however it was also 4p.m. by then.
The excursion went back to Jim Thorpe, and stopped to get ice cream after going down to Packerton Jct.
Arrival back at Port Clinton was about 8p.m.

Although all involved did their best, #9167 has issues that should be dealt with, namely:
1. air conditioning; non-existent after the electrical issue, this RDC doesn't have opening windows, like the other 2.
2.  Windows, a few are impossible to see out of because of damage/age.
3. toilet clogged on return trip.
The passenger makeup was chiefly the over-60 group, it was a little concerning to see these older folk standing around in Pittston Yard for over 2 hours, and then enduring a very warm 9167.

Thanks for the photos and the story.  Too bad the trip had issues.  At least the sun co-operated and some railfans added new mileage to their records.

Well done and nicely expressed; a pleasure to meet you on the trip as well (Bert with Hank and Mike).

Likewise, sir!, although I'm still recovering from being around Mike the whole day.
Thank you for sharing your vids from the day.
