New York as a state, and a city, has a rich heritage brought over from Holland by the early Dutch settlers..
Their word for a creek, a brook, a stream is the word "Kill"

Like in Peekskill, Fshkill, Spakenkill, Kill van Kull, Catskill, etc...

A little bit of history..

Unfortunately, nobody told PETA before they protested the name "Fishkill."

My favorite of all the "kills" is Fresh Kills -- home to New York City's huge garbage dump. Probably not very fresh any more.

That’s “fresh” as opposed to “salty”. And indeed here’s nothing fresh about that corner of Staten Island. The garbage mound is so tall that it’s on the FAA charts.

Last time I was there, it offered a dandy view of Manhattan, though.
