Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX tier 4 SD70’s ?

It is my understanding that the new tier 4 SD70’s have been assigned to Florida hauling unit trains of phosphorus (?). Have they actually been put in service yet ? If so, any reports of how they are doing ? Thanks.

I believe you meant phosphates (dry fertilizer), phophorus ignites when it comes in contact with oxygen and would melt its way through the bottoms of the hoppers!

yes they are in service, quite a few videos on youtube.if you can finde your way through all th crazy EMD/Progressive bashing.

It could be that the powers to be who run this company desire to see them in Jacksonville and other areas of Florida for awhile.

Essentially they are being held in captive service to keep them with a dedicated shop. 

THEY WANT TO KEEP THEM IN THE WARM WEATHER SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO PUT ANTIFREEZE IN THEM.  COST SAVINGS YOU KNOW.

So they can pull some heavy trains on relatively flat terrain perhaps...??

Most likely so they don't have to stock parts and consumables system wide for 10 units.

No GE  or EMD uses antifreeze in their cooling system.
