I will be taking a trip to the Harpers Ferry area?  What radio frequencies should I program and what is the train traffic like? Best place to view trains too?

160.230/160.320/161.520 should give you what you need. Good lift in the afternoon from the Amtrak platform for westbounds but there are loads of angles from the surrounding hills if you are willing to hike.

Depending upon your interest, Brunswick is about eight miles east of HFY.  And then Point of Rocks is about another 8 miles.  Both are interesting picture locations.

I haven’t been there since PSR started, but figure on 3 intermodals each way, maybe 4 or 5 merchandise each way, 2 pairs of rack trains each way and 3-4 coal drags each way, Plus the Capitol Ltd. Add rock runners on the branch and locals as well.

Shenandoah Junction is about 10 miles west, NS H Line crosses over CSX there

If you choose to cross the Potomac River to reach the C&O Canal, you can get to two trails that lead up to the top of Maryland Hights, not far either direction. The more known as well as hiker-friendly, but quite a bit longer trail, you would walk west on the Canal (a quarter of a mile, or so). To reach the other trail, you would go east on the Towpath, just far enough to reach the eastern portal of the the tunnel. Immediately after the road bridge crosses the tracks there is a very steep trail that follows them (above), reaching the top of the mountain and joins the other trail to the overlook.

One thing that draws me to Harpers Ferry, as well as Confluence, PA, is that if you love hearing the echo of the whistle from all directions for multiple seconds, you cannot get anything better.

Be careful this time of the year for poisonous snakes, copper heads and rattle snakes are on those mountains, especially going up on the Maryland side.

Watch out for snakes if you climb the trail at Maryland Heights.  Especially watch out where you place your hands.  Both timberland rattlers and copperheads are frequently seen here.

MARC serves Harpers Ferry but only three trains in each direction during the week. It might be tough to get all of them in good lighting conditions.
