Being familiar with this line from my working days; I think CN was the logical buyer.

Good. CN will hopefully build up traffic and upgrade the line. I am glad they bought it. What currently runs on this line?

Either that or a new shortline would start up.

Woodard is a curious end point. Was that selected to cut off the brewery?

I know it sees a fair amount of chemical traffic. That’s what we were sending south before closing our Valleyfield plant about a year and a half ago.

It's the junction with the branch toward Oswego, isn't it?

I imagine CN will have trackage rights into DeWitt to simplify interchange or, if trains operate as run-throughs, crew swaps.

Probably because that's where it connects to the CSX line to Oswego and Lakeview and CSX wasn't interested in selling that line. We'll probably see some trackage or haulage rights futher south and west from there.

Does Woodard also prevent CN from interchanging to the NYS&W?

Thank you in advance.

Not necesairilly, but even if they bought the line all the way to Syracuse propor they would still have to send traffic over CSX to get to the NYS&W. The line they're buying does not directly connect with the NYS&W.

Thanks.

CSX still has an indirect influence on the NYS&W through the preferred stock, doesn't it?

(CSX and NS helped an ownership group buy out public share owners like me, and take NYSW private. Neither class 1 operates the line.)

This acquisition means that CN should get a bigger slice of the revenue from the recently announced joing CN-CSX intermodal service between Montreal and Port of NJ and Philadelphia that will start 10/7/19. Also I wonder what STB / Congress will think about a Canadian-based RR controlling access to Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division, which "provides full-spectrum training and base operations support to all of the service branches, 11 states, and parts of Canada. Annually, Fort Drum offers training and base operations support to more than 26,500 Reserve and National Guard members as well as personnel from other federal, state, and local agencies."

It may be time for CP + NS to step up with a competitive IM service offering....

Not worried about the military and Canadian transport. The only ground route to Alaska is via Canada. Elmendorf-Richardson, Clear AFS, and Eielson/Wainright/Greely are just as important strategically as Drum, if not more.

I am curious if any connection will be made with NYS&W (I doubt it).  Currently the yard in Little Ferry NJ formerly used by NYS&W and CSX to unload double stacks sits empty.  Could make for a nice dropping point for containers from CN.

CSX paid my old employer a fat sum of money to buy part of our employee parking lot for the right of way to access the southern portion of that new intermodal yard.

And; in terms of how eager they really were to grow their business up there; we also asked them if they would consider adding a lead into our Valleyfield plant so we could ship out one side CN and the other side CSX. They didn’t even want to discuss it.
