Eastern Railroad Discussion > Speaking of the Strasburg RRDate: 08/30/19 13:23 Speaking of the Strasburg RR Author: richs I have a question regarding the Strasburg interchanging with NS. Being only 4.5 miles long what type of commodities do they procure and from where? Looking at a map of the area I see nothing but farms. Thanks

I must be brain dead today! Rich Date: 08/30/19 13:58 Re: Speaking of the Strasburg RR Author: Juniata Based on what I’ve seen on the VR railcam; they are handling center beams of lumber; some sort of animal feed supplements that arrives in covered hoppers and something in boxcars - no idea what that is but, could also be lumber. The last time I rode the Strasburg; they were also loading out some of those high side scrap gons.

their increase in freight business bears that out. Out Date: 08/30/19 17:01 Re: Speaking of the Strasburg RR Author: JimBaker Take a Google Earth flyover Strasburg, PA to see the layout of the yard, station and outlying buildings which show the transload lot.

They purchased some land and a building on site . The track stub ends currently at the property. Good to see them increasing capacity. --- Ken

They have a transload facility across the tracks from their engine house and some days it sees a lot of truck and railcar activity. They don't mind you taking photos, just stay off the tracks and away from the trucks.
These shots were taken in May 2018. Transferring bulk commodity from truck to covered hopper Switching the transload facility with their EMD switcher Heading east down the Strasburg main towards their interchange point with NS at Leaman Place. |
