Amazon has been dealing directly with railroads shipping intermodal trailers by rail for many months. Article seems to miss that fact.

Amazon has actually been doing direct for 2 years.  This is just their first official cans.  Walmart was late to game, just got the container specs first.

All of the Amazon's and Walmart DC that I go too only have JBs, HUB and schneider. I don't recall seeing to many UMAXs or EMPs.
