Thanks for posting these. It looks like a very good restoration was done to them.

Thank you, Tom,  for posting these, and also thank you for your help while the cars were in Willard. NKP 90 was just repainted and restored by Midwest Railway Preswervation Society. We sand blasted it to bare metal from top to bottom, including the roof the body and the under frame. We repaired lots of pin hole and major corrosion with welded in patches, put two coats of metal etching primer on it and two coats of industrial grade urethane enamel. The Nickel Plate Road lettering was done by a sign painter and we used a stencil cut from an original tracing that was made when we first got the car around fifty years ago.Our tthanks also to the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust for their generous grant and to Robert McCown for his donation towards this project.   NKP 62 is next in line for a massive exterior restoration and paint job, it needs substantial work to repair the rust damage on the roof.

The 62 was also part of the derailment of the Lackawanna Limited in Wayland, NY in 1943.  A local freight had not totally cleared the mainline, causing the Lackawanna Limited to sideswipe the freight engine, causing the boiler to rupture.  26 passengers in NKP 62 were killed from the steam and boiling water.  The 62 was repaired and returned to service and is still with us today.

Kudos to the folks from the group in Cleveland for keeping these cars up and in service.  Happy to hear the cars are out and running.  If everything falls together as planned, they may well meet up with another NKP car this fall.

This is a link to a newspaper article about the 1943 wreck in Wayland, New York.

Looks like the railroad again ignores the handling instructions and couples the passenger car to a car with shelf coupler, no doubt damaging the buffer. I swear if you put in the handling instructions "only couple to shelf couplers" the RR's would ignore it and couple it to something normal.
