Had some free time to chase and photograph Watco's Blue Ridge Southern Railroad (operating part of the former Southern Railway's Murphy Branch) in western North Carolina.

Photo 1:  BLU T31 crosses the French Broad river on trackage rights departing Asheville, NC

Photo #2:  Now on home rails at the T 4.0 MP near Candler, NC

You went out of your way to choose first-class locations. An excellent set of photos.

Very nice photos and very nice light. It must have taken some effort to tag the bridge in your first photo.

On the former Murphy Branch there is a lot of traffic for the paper mill in Canton. Some traffic as far as Waynesville, not much west of there. GSMR has the line west of Sylva/Dillsboro.

Really nice series, Grady.  Missed this one while flying over the pond.  Awesome work!

Great photos of a neat operation.  With the good traffic level, at least to Canton, why did NS give it up to a short line?  Of course, beyond Canton there isn't much traffic and a tough mountain crossing at Balsam Gap.  Maybe that answers it.

Is there anything left at the old American Enka plant?

Part of Enka is still standing and occupied, some of it is standing empty, but most of it was razed. Rail access taken out although the bridge over the creek remains in place. Lots of talk about what to use the now-empty land for, no action yet. For those who don't know, at one time it was the largest rayon factory in the U.S.

Absolute Fantistact photo's !!! Wish the Pisgah Forest branch was still in service, few railfans ever shot the line, omly one I know of who lived there for awhile in 1980's.
