NS Pittsburgh Line is re-opened at Luxor PA
Author: JPB

At 0400 Sunday, a doublestack train is slowly climbing the grade west at Horseshoe Curve so I'm guessing the Pittsburgh line is re-opened for stack and rack trains through Luxor PA as NS had forecast in yesterday's service alert.

Were there reroutes on CSXT via Selkirk, NY or Cumberland, MD? How about on the NS via Buffalo? I know the Conemaugh Line could handle some traffic.

Thank you in advance.

Yesterday, 22W, 67Z, 777 detoured via the Conemaugh (at least, probably others as well).

I think one EB stack or auto train detoured over the Southern Tier to the Sunbury line to Harrisburg yesterday evening.

That cleanup was pretty quick...   Again, it is good that nobody was injured.

It's going to be an interesting year to look back on derailment numbers...   And 2019 totals will be available about March.

Looking back here are derailment numbers for the US class 1 railroads since 2016... (Source safetydata.fra.dot.gov)
2016 Derailments by Railroad: UP 324, BNSF 268, NS 193, CSX 156
2017 Derailments by Railroad: UP 347, BNSF 275, NS 175, CSX 167
2018 Derailments by Railroad: UP 380, BNSF 292, CSX 192, NS 191
2019 Derailments by Railroad: UP 300, BNSF 204, NS 126, CSX 71  (Jan 1 through Aug 31, 2019)
(Note: Through August NS and CSX were actually doing better than in prior years...)

Total derailments Jan 1, 2016 through Aug 31, 2019:
UP 1351
BNSF 1039
NS 685
CSX 586

Thank you for the numbers and analysis. I don't know if the data is available, but train-miles per derailment stratified by years and railroads would be interesting.

With PSR, I am betting that as the trains get fewer and bigger, the tendency to derail is increasing.

Which contractors did the cleanup? Corman? Cranemasters? Others?

Last time I checked NS and CSX have about the same ton-miles (CSX slightly higher), with BNSF about double NS and UP a bit more than BNSF...
The last time I looked at derailments per million ton miles NS and UP were highest and that was before NS started PSR.

From the numbers you can see CSX trended upwards from 2016 to 2018, but they had a 48% reduction in derailments first 8 months of 2019 (compared to same months in 2018).   We'll have to see where NS goes (I think trending upward now) and hopefully they'll learn not to put empty centerbeams on the front of trains...

Thank you. I'll be curious to see what does happen with train derailments as PSR progresses.

They were observed headed in that direction anyway. Anybody with on-scene reports?
