I am completely convinced that the big railroads absolutely do not want new business.  They want a fixed amount of business so they can have a fixed number of engines and employees.  They are no longer wanting to grow, and I believe the removal and/or downsizing of yards both big and small back up my line of thinking on this.  I remember overhearing a trainmaster's conversaion on the phone with someone a few years ago.  He seemed a little agitated, so I asked him what was going on.  His reply, so help me God, was, "The (expletive) traffic department is out there trying to drum up business on a branch line we're trying to get rid of."        

        Easier to find a place for that guy in the pastry sector of the economy.  Be rid of him.
