EJ&E (SD38-2) and B&LE (SD40T-2 purchased second hand and rebuilt). Now working for the owner of the former US Steel railroads, Canadian National. Working out of Kirk Yard, the former primary EJ&E facility in Gary IN, adjacent to the steel mills.

The Hammond-Whiting Amtrak station would be off the photo to the right, if it was even built at the time. (I think it was about 1982.)
As a kid in the '50s, we often played in the area (even on railroad property!) and I am old enough to remember steam locos, especially the "Indian Hill and Iron Range" loco that worked the Bairstow slag dumping operation that was just a couple hundred yards from the casino,along the "J" tracks. The filtration plant also had a spur that delivered cars with supplies. |
