Just a couple of ex-steel-worker's
Author: PRRFan

Turn back the clock about 40 years and and you could see this same sight. USS road power on the EJ&E's south Chicago branch working its way east, and back to the J's Kirk Yard in Gary.

Locomotives that belonged to railroads formerly owned by US Steel.  EJ&E (SD38-2) and B&LE (SD40T-2 purchased second hand and rebuilt).  Now working for the owner of the former US Steel railroads, Canadian National.  Working out of Kirk Yard, the former primary EJ&E facility in Gary IN, adjacent to the steel mills.

Improper apostrophe use pointed out by this ex condr.

Forty years ago the 910 was an SP SD45T-2.

Thanks for the photos. I grew up about a half mile from the filtration plant in photo 3. The Hammond-Whiting Amtrak station would be off the photo to the right, if it was even built at the time. (I think it was about 1982.)

As a kid in the '50s, we often played in the area (even on railroad property!) and I am old enough to remember steam locos, especially the "Indian Hill and Iron Range" loco that worked the Bairstow slag dumping operation that was just a couple hundred yards from the casino, along the "J" tracks. The filtration plant also had a spur that delivered cars with supplies.
