D&H Land Today

Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2019

Slim pickings today.

1. NS 23K comes through Wells Bridge this morning with NS 7604, leading 3639 and 9593 and snow flying !

2. Later in the day the 205 comes south at Tromp Road north of Schenevus with NS 9716, 9246 and 9341, snow flying and a stiff wind gust, very exhilarating.

3. Up at Mechanicville the 22K that went through Otego at 0-dark-30 is just crossing the Hudson River sometime around 3pm with NS 1181, 9296 and 9686 now on Pan Am heading for Ayer, MA.

Not sure what happened to 11R or 30T.

A quick grab shot of the Amtrak bridge over the Mohawk at Schenectady, if only there was a train near ! Taken while stopped at a traffic light.

Schenectady Amtrak all decked out in Seasonal Lighting. Out back Train 283 was making a passenger stop.

I wish I had a map of the old D&H Lines to see where this is all happening--I'll do some research.

That train heading for Ayer, MA--will it go thru the Hoosac Tunnel??

I hope the NS can grow the busniness on it's ex-D&H lines!

The September 2018 issue of R&R has a nice clear (but not very detailed) map associated with the article “The Last Decade of D&H”.

I enjoy your coverage and photos of this area, train1275.  Thanks.

coach: Yes, the train will be on the former B&M and pass through the Hoosac Tunnel on the way to Ayer.

Where do trains like 22K change from NS to Pan Am Southern trackage?  The Pan Am system map (link here) suggests this happens just west of Mechanicsville, at Ushers.  The NS system map suggests it is farther west, somewhere near Schenectady.

I believe that the cut line from NS to Canadian Pacific is near the GE plant in Schenectady, or up a little further by the Amtrak station. I have never really been clear on that. They then run on CP into Mechanicville to the Pan Am. The Pan Am / CP joint track begins near Waite Road west of the "trainagle" near Ashdown Road  near Elnora.

Others may have better info.

CPF485 in Schenectady is the CP/NS division point. The shared trackage (as far as I know) goes from CPF 477 to CPF 468. The Pan Am/NS trains usually go into the Mechanicville yard at CPF 470, or hold on the siding between CPF 470, CPF 469 & CPF 468 (if CP can hold them) Other times the train gets parked between CPF 466 & CPF 464 behind Mechanicville Price Chopper and Ferry St/RT.67/Hempstreet Park crossing.
Hope this info helps ;-)
