Taking advantage of a warm winter's day in Hershey
Author: Pattenburg

With temperatures more spring like than winter on Monday, I was off to Hershey (PA) to photograph NS's trains using their cocoa bean silos as a landmark. First train through was 21M passing by the 130 foot tall silos. When the first sixteen silos were constructed in 1950, all sixteen silos needed to be poured simultaneously adding to this project’s complexity. Pouring of the concrete began on August 14 and completed on August 24. The 6,500 cubic yards of concrete to build them would need the following components: 5,362 tons of one-inch stone, 4,160 tons of sand, 1,898 tons of cement and 130,000 gallons of water. Reinforcing this massive concrete structure would take 302 tons of rebar. Eight new silos would be constructed in 1957 making a total of 24 silos to hold the cocoa beans. A little later on in the day NS 65K, with NS 9264 and NS 9682, would come west. The Derry Road signal bridge can be seen in the background and off to the right. The severed tracks adjacent to NS 9264's position lead into the plant alongside Hershey's building 38 according to a plant site map from 1962. Looking at this scene it represents a miniscule amount of the concrete that was used in building Hershey's former production facility in East Hershey.

very interesting stuff about the concrete work on the silos and it makes an outstanding background.

in the bottom photo, was there originally pasage ways of some sort under that bridge between the concrete gussets?
or is it just heavily braced?

I know that Spring Creek runs through there and some of the concrete work might have been for track supports that ran through that area. There is also a tunnel that carried a street beneath the tracks that lead to the power house.

Now that the main factory is gone the view has really opened up for a shot with the silos in the background, very neat!
