Long Grafton & Upton train
Author: JPB

On the Presidents Day holiday 2/17/20, G&U ran a 9 car train of loads south to its Hopedale Transload facility comprising 2 fly ash covered hoppers and 7 centerbeams loaded with sheet rock. For its return to the North Grafton interchange with CSX, the northbound local grabbed 5 empty centerbeams and 2 empty covered hoppers. At West Upton, G&U's approximate mid-point and site of another transload facility (wood pellets and various hazardous/non-hazardous liquids), the train pick up another 6 empties (covered hoppers and tanks). In photo #1, the train is departing W Upton after DTMF-actuating the Hartfod Avenue crossing gates. In #2, we see the entire consist in the low light of late afternoon after the train has crossed Glen Ave in West Upton. Lastly, the video the train as it nears Grafton Center at Sibley St. This is the biggest train I've seen so far on the prospering G&U.

In other developments, while the 1.5 mile extension from current end of track at Hopedale to the CSX Milford branch isn't progressing, a new transload siding has been built at Hopedale with another track or two planned. See next message for recent Google Earth aerial of recently built N Grafton yard to support LPG transload and the new two track engine house.

Google Earth imagery from August 2019. Photo #4 shows the original N Grafton interchange yard and the newly constructed adjacent LPG transload facility as well as the newly constructed 4 stub track yard adjacent to the newly constructed 2 track engine house. Photos 5 and 6 are zoomed in captures of the two ends of the N Grafton facilities. And if you look really carefully at #5, on the left you'll see the long out-of-service G&U F7 and Geeps.

Good to see, that's a lot of construction for a shortline, need to tell the Claas 1s that therre is potential for carload growth,
oops forgot, that's a no-no.
