Close call at Greencastle,PA. @ 4:43pm
Author: bigsavage

About the dumbest thing I've seen trespassing wise in a long time just occurred at Greencastle Station right in front of the VR cam.
While a photographer shot pics of a young Mennonite couple in the middle of the 2 tracks, about a half-dozen others wandered all over the tracks until a westbound intermodal entered the picture.
They scattered like a flock of geese with one kid pausing to scoop a pre-schooler off the track.
All the engineer could do was lay on the horn.
If their schools don't have Operation Lifesaver, they should get it, this was scary to just watch.

Just backed the cam up and watched it. Freaking unbelievable! Crew must have had their hearts in their throats.

that is amazing, the photographer had a grin on his face after the train passed.  Saw someone walking across trestle in MA other day on a webcam seconds before Amtrak 448 passed.

Good thing that girl was at least paying attention and saw it when she did and the boys didn't fall while they were running.   The photographer should be charged with something.

All the adults should be charged and not just the photographer

I have seen a lot of vids of close calls, but that was one of the most scary ones ever.

They are extremely lucky. Speed for intermodal trains through there is 60 MPH, and southbound trains approach the location around a curve, with several visual obstructions.

I do hope the footage gets forwarded to local media outlets, and law enforcement.

To update, the organization that owns and operates the station has been advised of the incident, the video clip and photos from the Virtual Railfan cams are in Greencastle PD's possession, and an investigation has been started, focusing on the photographer.
Operation Lifesaver in Harrisburg has also been contacted. Anyone on here involved with OL?
Greencastle PD would like to hear from anyone who may have more information.
Let's hope something positive comes out of this near tragic incident.

For anyone interested, VR has split almost 3 minutes of the near miss into a youtube clip with appropriate safety messages.
