NS line in southern Indiana.
Author: howeld

I working out of town in south central Indiana. Around Jasper, IN Looking to see if there is anything close to railfan in my off time.
Closest class one mainline is NS’s route west out of Louisville. I don’t know anything about the line. Not even the subdivision name or number of trains. Any information helps.
Thanks
Derek

The is their mainline from Danville,KY to Kansas City, MO. It has been a faily busy corridor with plenty of trains. I knew how operations were there years ago due to working the line from Louisville east. The west side has a helper district (or did) and plenty of business.

There is also a couple of railroad museums in the area.

Derek:
The Indiana Dept. of Transportation does provide a decent map (updated almost every year) of the rail network in the Hooiser state.

Just south of Jasper is Huntingburg.  Huntingburg is on the NS' Southern-East District and is also where NS' Evansville Branch (to Yankeetown and Rockport) joins the main.  Scheduled through freight traffic includes:

•intermodal
223 Kansas City, MO - Atlanta, GA daily
224 Atlanta, GA - Kansas City, MO daily

•autorack
239 Louisville, KY - Kansas City, MO (UP) daily
276 Jacksonville Westlake, FL - Princeton, IN daily
285 Kansas City, MO - Jacksonville, FL daily

•manifest
167 St. Louis, MO - Louisville, KY daily
168 Louisville, KY - St. Louis, MO daily

•unit steel
60A Rockport, IN - Middletown, OH Sa-Th
61A Middletown, OH - Rockport, IN Fr-We

There are also occasional coal trains to / from Yankeetown / Warrick and Kingston, TN.  Most of those coal trains originate from the mines in Southern Indiana around Princeton.  There are also occasional grain trains.  Locals D10, D14, and D15 are based out of Huntingburg.

Thanks for the information.  Managed to see three trains from 5p to 7pm.  Chased a empty coil train off the branch as far as Taswell, IN  It met an Wb mix/auto rack but by that time sun was down.

There is a helper district between Youngtown (Louisville) and Georgetown, In.m about 8 or 9 miles.  There is a 2.80% ruling grade coming out of the Ohio Valley.  There is also a mile-long Duncan tunnel just east of Georgetown but access to it is not easy.

Derek,
AAR channel 79 is the one you want -- 161.295.  You have been provided some good information by the previous posters. Traffic can be sporadic on the line.  Aside from the trains listed, there are several coal trains per week typically coming from the Illinois Basin.

Thanks. I’ll note that for future visits. Radio reference didn’t have anything listed for this line. And scanning while following the trains Monday didn’t yield any hits.

I’m done down here for the week after today. Planning on stopping by INRD’s tulip trestle but I won’t have much time to hang around.

Thanks for the help.

INRD's SAHW train from Indianapolis (Senate Avenue) to Jasonville (Hiawatha Yard) usually gets to Tulip late in the afternoon. Don't know how that fits into your schedule but if you want a shot of the trestle with a train on it, that's the time of day to shoot for. Good luck!!

Train often gets there around 5-5:30 p.m. so be patient.
