NS High-hood Portsmouth, VA
Author: GN416

Back in November of 2011 I caught some activity.

According to my intel at the time, the images I caught here of the High Hood Geep and N&W caboose would've been running along the original Norfolk Southern trackage in Portsmouth.  This is the secondary line north of the main-line in Hampton Roads.

Any more info anyone have?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

Having grown up in Portsmouth, your post intrigued me since the “Original N&S” didn’t have a track in Portsmouth (they accessed Norfolk via Moyock, NC and Chesapeake).

I quickly figured out your local was the one that operates the former Virginian Railway line in the city. Your photo is taken at the George Washington Highway (US 17) grade crossing. The Suburban propane seen in your photo is still located there.

HI Grady, thanks for your clarification.  On on maps I have looked at I could never seem to see where the original NS would've come in to the region.  So thanks!

And yes, the Highway 17 crossing is where I was.  It was just pure luck to catch this movement!

Original N&S? It was Norfolk Southern (NS) just like now. No &.

Read his original post. He wasn’t sure if he was looking at the Original N&S line or not.

In the case, this train is on the former VGN, as the original N&S accessed Norfolk from Chesapeake (Via Moyock, Great Bridge)

One again in plain English. There is, nor was, any railroad called N&S or Norfolk & Southern. It's Norfolk Southern, or NS, just like the Norfolk Southern or NS now is called.

That’s absolutely correct. But it’s often referred to as the N&S as to not confuse it with the current railroad.

But hey, thanks for being “that guy”.
