I could use some information about two Norfolk Southern trains of the past.
First, is RR 262. This was a RoadRailer train that in NS's early years teminated in New Jersey and in later years termianted in Bethlehem PA. My questions are, where did the train originate from? Which New Jersey terminal was its end terminal?.
Second, I have a photograph marked as train 457. It is travelling west from Allentown, PA on the Reading line. It is a manifest freight i.e. a mixed freight. Does anybody know what the destination was?

262 came from Chicago via Fort Wayne. It may even have originated on UP (Twin Cities?) for a while.

When I worked for NS ,1998-2004, out of Fort Wayne, 262 used to originate at Calumet Yard in Chicago, make a stop at Fort Wayne to  switch trailers, then go onto Sandusky, Oh. where it would switch cars yet again there picking up a large block of trailers for Behtlehem, PA. on the rear then depart Sandusky via the connection track to the old Conrail main to head east.  Seems to me if I remember the head end of the train always said Newark, NJ. where it would terminate.  If it ran as any other symbol on Conrail I would not know about that.  I always figured it ran as 262 east bound and 261 westbound.

Except that during the first year or so of that time period, RR262 worked Crestline rather than Sandusky, running an all-CR routing east of Fort Wayne. And yes, RR261 was its opposite. NS built the Sandusky ramp because it wasn't getting the ex-PRR east of Fort Wayne.

I'm fairly sure right after the conrail split up, 457 was the old ALNS. I think it was Allentown to Spencer.

I remember seeing a 457 once or twice, but thought it was a D&H/StL&H/CP train that came down the Lehigh Line to Allentown then headed for Philly or Potomac yard. Hard to believe that’s 20 years ago almost!!

I think the 456/457 was the D&H later CP/StL&H,  pair to Philadelphia.

What was the typical cargo in the eastbound trailers to Newark?  And, what went westbound?

They were NOT CP / DH trains, they were NS trains to/from Allentown.

Hi. After consulting with other people, I have come up with the answer to the question I originally posed. At the time the photo was taken, trains 456 and 457 were NS trains running between Allentown and Roanoke. At other times. the southern terminal may have changed. Thanks to all who responded. It was helpful.
 

The cp train that terminated in allentown was 280
