D-L ALCOs Parked in Plain Sight
Author: PennRailVideos

On the way to a friend's place on Saturday, I learned that the DL ALCOs were parked at Tobyhanna awating to be taken west. With the light being right for a westbound shot, I decided to make a detour. Little did I know that even though it was sunny and beautiful along RT 80, just a little bit north on 380 would be a different story. I waited for about a half hour or so to see if the clouds would move along, but they decided this was where they were gonna hang out for the evening. Even in less than perfect shooting conditions, the white ALCOs always brighten up a picture.

Cool shots - thanks for posting.

Always loved the look of Tobyhanna tower - it's withstood the test of time quite well.  What does the DL use it for now?  I wonder what's left inside (if anything) - not sure when it was officially retired, but it has to be at least 45-50 years and probably more.  It would make a great museum piece or a meeting house for a railroad club.

Looks like somebody is caring for it. I haven't seen the Slateford or Port Morris Cut Off towers recently, but they were pretty ragged a few years ago.

Ths railroad is amazing, keeping Alco's clean is a huge task with the way the Alco's seem to spit oil all over the units I'll give them a 10+, A class act!

Built/formed/poured concrete around the 20's?

You were able to go up there during the grand opening, cause I remember going up there while stopped on a trip pulled by 261. Can't be THAT bad inside.

Tobyhanna looks to be similar to Port Morris, Slateford, and other concrete towers bult about the time of the New Jersey Cut-Off.  Maybe 1910, or so. Earlier towers were often made of wood.

Actually the Tobyhanna Station directly behind the photographer is a museum and a very nice one, kept in great shape and open many weekends.

I think the tower lasts in good condition because it is so visible.   There are residential homes just to the right of it.
