Staunton, VA area traffic??
Author: dschlegel

On a road trip with my dad and brother this weekend. We’re spending tonight in Staunton, VA, headed to Hawks Nest lodge tomorrow night by way of Prince and Thurmond, checking out Cass on Saturday, then back to Staunton for Saturday night before working our way home.

What traffic should we expect, if any, around Staunton this evening or Saturday evening? What about Prince and Thurmond on a Friday (besides Amtrak Cardinal)?

Thanks everyone!

Maybe a CSX westbound hopper or grain empty but they are hit and miss. The shen valley RR usually goes on duty early AM so you may see them putting a train together off commerce road. The BB I’m not sure about

Thanks Gary, we swung by the Shenandoah Valley this afternoon when we hit town and they have some interesting power!

For tonight we’re tailgating in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn hoping for something. We say a BB local head west around 18:10 with a single locomotive and two cars.

If you have the scanner radio app on your phone there is a feed from Afton also the signal at west brand may give you some indication on a CSX move

Don’t forget Waynesboro is just a few miles east and NS runs through there. I’m the morning you might catch 202 and 18t north

A local is also based out of waynesboro

Good luck

For the CSX New River Subdivision, Friday is a boom or bust day.  Should be an RJ Corman train coming down the loup creek later this morning - and will leave Thurmond mid-late evening when CSX calls a crew for it.  You could see upwards of 8 train in daylight, but probably half that not counting the redbird.

Thanks! We caught the EB Cardinal this morning at Prince, and have been at Thurmond for about an hour now. No traffic yet, hopefully something will roll by before we need to split around 3.

Thanks again!

Hopefully the 'caretaker' at Prince didn't annoy you too much.  He's about 51 cards short of a full deck.

We noticed. Thankfully there was a CSX maintainer there that we spoke with a bit instead.

On a side note a train with CSX power just came down the RJC line and is stopped at Thurman.

The coal drag RJC brought down to Thurmond just went east with CSX 15 leading.

Channel 023 and 040 for those using actual railroad radios.
