CSX locals still service x-WMRY trackage
Author: bigsavage

Although the Western Maryland Railway (WMRY) has been gone for 40+ years, some of its mainline trackage still generates revenue for CSX.
On Sept. 15, 2020, the daily D797 local from Hagerstown, MD.  to Hanover, PA. has reached Highfield, MD. on top of the Catoctin Mountains, and will leave a cut of empty covered hoppers for interchange to the Maryland Midland, another operator of former WMRY trackage.
The regular crew on this job is friendly to respectful railfans.

The eastbound D797 is approaching the road crossing at Charmian, PA. and will soon arrive at the Specialty Granules (SGI) plant, where they will exchange loads/empties, and then roll east to Hanover, servicing several more accounts along the route.

Later, CSX local KH00 is using NS trackage rights from Hagerstown to Shippensburg, PA., where it will reverse onto a stub of the WMRY Lurgan mainline to Letterkenny Army Depot, where it will interchange with the shortline that serves the base and an adjacent business park.
Train is eastbound (compass direction northward) at Rieff Church Rd., just west of Maugansville, MD.
