NS Dash 944-CW Question
Author: DevalDragon

What did the first order of NS Dash 944-CWs look like when they were first delivered - specifically the markings along the frame/walkway. With time, weather and changes in FRA reflective standards  there have been a lot of variations since the original Dash 9s were delivered in 1995.

Tan primer, crude stenciling of road numbers.

At least as far as the first order goes there with as no frame striping at all, just solid black side sills. Front and rear handrails and cut levers were yellow along with the edge of the steps at each corner, a short yellow stripe under each ditch light and a short, thin white stripe on the anti-climber. Do a google search for NS 8889 and you can find photos of it straight out of the paint booth.

Here's a look at NS Dash 9-40CW 8889 in its original paint scheme. Photo credit to Harold Hodnett.

I appreciate all the responses.

I caught the 9418 this evening on Ogden Dunes Indiana. Is this hash mark frame marking from GE or did NS add it later?

The 9418 received the broken diagonal frame striping when it was originally painted by NS, as that was the NS standard between 1997-2002. If you look carefully at the photo you posted, you'll see that some of the diagonal striping has since been covered with straight reflective striping, which became standard with the NS "horsehead" scheme in 2002 and later an FRA requirement.
