Helmstetter's Curve - Western Maryland Scenic
Author: cinder

Visited the cemetery overlooking Helmstetter's Curve the day after Thanksgiving.  Unfortunately, the pandemic has shut down Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

1.  A Helmstetter grave marker.
2.  View of the curve and the rebuilt red Helmstetter barn from the cemetery.
3.  January 2004 - Sleet and freezing rain

I don't know that I've ever seen a grave with out a date for time of
death - maybe, for "awaiting spouce", but...

Nice shots.

Sorry to hear the scenic tourist line is closed due to the pandemic.
Odd - in PA, a state known for shutting it all down, most of our tourist
lines are open (New Hope, Strasburg, Steam Into History), and nearby
Wilmington and Western.  I mean... not Steamtown, of course.

I wonder if the farm is for sale.  I was on a motor car trip over the Western Maryland Scenic a couple of months ago.  There was a for sale sign by the railroad towards the farm.

Illinois Railway museum had to shutdown planned event which would have included walking around museum grounds and  taking street car rides.  A chance for families to get out and do something safe.  Since they did a lot of lighting work, there is now a drive thu planned.???  Pot stores are still open of course.

East Troy is open in Wisconsin

My understanding is that they are shut down not by governmental mandate but by choice (assume that they figure business will be down enough it doesn't make sense to run?). Here are a few pics from better days to add to Cinder's excellent offerings.

My sister-in-law had her name on my brother John's gravestone since the mid 90s. She died this January and her date of death is still not on the slab, Neither is there an historic marker for the nearby deceased NYO&W main nearby in Guilford, N.Y.

Also I want to comment on your 2004 miserable weather steam freight shot. Some of my most precious slides are those taken when I should have been indoors! This shot is as close to a perfect painting as I've ever seen, Thank you for posting!

My grandparents had their stone with birth dates 25+ years before either of them passed away. My mother was not pleased when they took her to the cemetery next door to our new house and said “look we will be neighbors someday.” Hind sight it was good of them to have everything ready so my parents could just grieve and didn’t have to worry about picking stones and gravesites.

Hey ...... A little planning goes a long way.  I have "urned" my final resting place.  Yes, a cremation is in my future ..... but not near future.

There are a lot of railroaders buried there from early on.
My father in law, a B&O passenger and freight conductor is buried there as well as several brothers and older relatives, all B&O employees.I'm sure it is just a few of many.
