Major NS derailment at Moselle, Mississippi- possibly NS 130.
Author: Apalachicola721

NS (probably 130) from New Orleans derailed at Moselle, MS this morning at the MP 72. Think around a dozen cars hit the dirt. Ovett-Moselle road and Beeson road completely blocked. Happened at the mid train DPU’s as they came by the switch which goes into the house track in Moselle. Switch position faces south.

NS 9384 and 4011 were mid train and hit the ditch. Piled up everywhere. Appears when they pulled the remaining portion of the train north of Moselle-Oak grove road (which is open) the last car which could be pulled away (a NS coil car) Was sitting/leaning down as if it had a damage wheel set or center pin.

Will post photos if I can. Patrick Bigbie with WDAM 7 news of Petal was there taking multiple photos.

Amtrak 19 departed Atlanta for Birmingham. Will be interesting to see what Amtrak does. Train is now marked "service disruption". The most viable detour would be Meridian-Jackson-New Orleans but I doubt Amtrak would do it.

It wouldn’t go the speedway on KCS to Jackson. KCS would never allow that to happen, the CEO has a hatred for Amtrak.

Nor would CN likely host it from Jackson on the Beaumont sub down to Hattiesburg to hand off to NS. Not feasible. The only other option would send it down the 3B as a dead head but that would be stupid.

19 was turned at Birmingham.

Amtrak has never detoured over KCS and never will. Hey will terminated in Birmingham and Bus the passengers the rest of the way.

Plus with the crescent only running 3 days per week, it’s not worth it.

No doubt. Yeah KCS never will take Slamtrak in any case.

This tri weekly BS is a joke.

The only other option would have been CSX B'ham-Mobile-New Orleans, but that takes a long time and unless the derailment would have been cleared for this morning's 20, there's no point.

Out of curiosity what is KCSs beef with Amtrak?
Never heard about it before.

Pretty sure KCS did host some Amtrak test trains between New Orleans and Baton Rouge several years ago.  Earlier than that, there was at least one test train for a potential Meridian-Dallas extension of the Crescent.

They do host the Sunset Limited regularly for a very short stretch at Beaumont, to cross the Neches River.

If they have a beef with Amtrak now, it must be a relatively recent development.

It’s not necessarily a beef between the two, it’s just KCS doesn’t want passenger rail on their lines. They don’t want to have to put a freight train in the hole for a passenger train or deal with the responsibility of housing passenger rail.

The test trains were basically forced upon them so they allowed it to happen to get folks off their backs. That’s why nothing ever came of the test afterwards.

As far as the sunset routing goes, I was always under the impression that it was for emergencies and such that they run on KCS, but either way, it’s such a short distance that it’s not even worth mentioning.

Long story short, KCS just flat out doesn’t want to be apart of the Amtrak hype.
