CECX #1919 (Cummins T4 Test Unit) - Present Status
Author: krm152

Cummins, TMV Control Systems, and Brookville Equipment jointly developed a T4 freight locomotive with a Cummins prime mover. The test unit was numbered CECX #1919. Here is a link to a Railway Age 12/1/2016 article describing this unit:

Less than three years later, srman posted a photo on TO of CECX #1919 sitting forlorn at LIRR's Jeffersonville, IN yard. Here is a link to that post:

On April 5, 2020, trainmaster53 reported on the Indiana Railroads Bull Session that the unit was at the Knoxville Locomotive Works renumbered KLWX #1998. Here is a link to that post:

I suspect at KLWX #1998 or part of it will be used for some other project.
Most people thought a locomotive with a Cummins diesel would not work in heavy freight service; it appears they were correct.

I was curious about that loco. Back in 2015, it sat for some time at CSX's Willard, Ohio yard, as pictured from November of that year..

Cummins did very well in the industrial locomotive market during the 1940's through 1960's and many are still running today in the market they were designed for and many still live on tourist operatiions.

The 25-45 tonners, mostly built for the military,  all were built with 150 hp model HBI six-cylinder in line engines and the 80-tonners were built with model L 250 hp inline six cylinder Cummins. Originally equipped with the "single disc" fuel pump which was easily damaged by impurities in the fuel many were converted to the Cummins "PT" fuel systems and they still rattle on today!

I don't understand the comment that the Cummins prime mover wouldn't work in heavy freight service.  They seem to be working fine in the Siemens SC-44 Chargers in passenger service. Why would freight service be different?  - Eric B.

Different load patterns and profiles.  Heavy freight is hard on everything.  Miles and miles of full load.

I don't know any of the details of how the testing of this unit went.  But there's more to a locomotive than the prime mover; it could easily be the case that the Cummins engine was fine but the electronics had issues, or vice versa... Or whatever mechanism was in place for Tier 4 (or whatever EPA level) requirements...
