CSX road slugs with GP30 carbody
Author: srman

Even though they were just slugs I always enjoyed catching these GP30 carbody classics leading CSX locals. I've haven't seen any for awhile, at least in the Louisville Ky. area and was wondering if they had been retired from the roster?

Does CSX have any road slugs still in use?

I haven't seen any lately but I hardly get out these days.
Used to see them frequently on tank car runs from Ford Plant to Buckner.

I haven't seen any CSXT slugs in a few months in central MD.  I have seen at least two GP40-2s without them that formerly had them.  Gerry

Looking at Bullsheet, lots of them are retired.  I've heard through the grapevine the reminder of the GP30 carbodies are stored pending retirement.  Last one I saw in service was April 4, 2020, in Apex, NC.  2217 worked Apex locals from January to April 2020.  It's odd to see lots of 6400 and 6900s running around naked without their slugs.    Just as an aside, the GP35 carbodies seem to be rarer these days.  I've seen one this year, but the upper 2300 newer slugs seem to still be out and about.

LTEX has a few leased out. One set at Etter TX on TXNW. Another at Eldorado OK at a grain silo.

Supposedly CSX is retiring these over the other road slugs as the roofs do not have enough room for PTC equipment installation.
