Clinchfield RR Number boards

Question on the use of the Yellow locomotive number boards by the Clinchfield RR. If I recall they signified something about the units that had them.  It appears from what I've seen, even some of the repaints into Family Lines grey retained them.  The first and second generation diesels in the original grey/yellow livery didn't seem to have them, but I can't say for sure.

There was no special meaning to the yellow numberboards.
