More NS layoffs

"Less than 20" at the Juniata locomotive shops in Altoona.

https://www.wearecentralpa.com/news/norfolk-southern-furloughs-employees-at-juniata-locomotive-shop/

Is there an end in sight to getting rid of people? [rhetorical question] 2021 not starting off very well.

But, they're still hiring more management positions and building a new office building in Atlanta.

It's for management; that doesn't count.

Yeah that's after they laid off some experienced and knowledgeable management to save some money. Just bring in some kids straight out of college and pay them alot less to try and do the same job. You get what you pay for...

Hmmmm, well, I'm pretty sure that the people about to be layed off are stock holders too.

Thats just it with PSR their isn't an end. Its constantly lowering the bar, once you hit one goal you set a new one. Idea is to always not have enough employees so you dont have anybody sitting earning money. Its better to be short of people than have enough

Rob Krebs was randomly cutting jobs at Santa Fe in the '80s, as he described in a recent interview.
Search Nostalgia and History.  It went something like,
Krebs to the Corwith Manager: "How many guys work in the Corwith shop"
"20".
"Make it 13."
Amazing how he knew what to do off the cuff like that, maybe he learned it at Harvard.

Tee new BN (SLSF) management of the 80s issued an edict to reduce staff at every station by 10%. There were four of us at Bellingham, all fully occupied for every shift keeping up with the Ferndale agency work as well as the Bellingham and Ferndale teletype and train order work as well as Bellingham ticket work. You can't cut part of a person, so 4 - 10% = 3. We coujldn't keep up. Then the second 10% cut edict came. 3 people - 10% = 2 people. A lot stopped getting done, such as charging for demurrage and switching, billing cars, listing up spots and pulls. Soon thereafter, a team of senior management started telling complaining customers that BN didn't want to improve service, they wanted the complaining customers to go away, which they ultimately did.
