8801 horsepower, at rest
Author: march_hare

Here we are a few days ago at the main grade crossing in Fonda, NY. There's a common sight-a unit ethanol train parked on the controlled siding, waiting for a chance to proceed east. Despite the chilly, 20-something weather, both units are shut down.

8800 horsepower, waiting to do something useful.

But look behind them, and you'll see there is more idle horsepower in town. An Amish family has come to town to do some shopping, and they have brought some horsepower of their own. Just like the train, he's just hanging out in the sunshine for now.

How soon until the cancel-culture crowd forces the town of Mohawk to change ts name?

I doubt that this will change.  The Mohawk (who had one of their main pre-European villages a few miles west at Canajoharie) are still a significant presence in the area.  There are several shrines to a Mohawk woman from the colonial era who became the first Native American Catholic saint (Kateri Tekatwitha), and a few properties around the area that are managed by the tribe.

BTW, the Amish population is increasing steadily as well.  They are excellent farmers, and they recognize high quality soil wherever they find it.
