What trains symbols (including Amtrak) operate through Folkston GA?  Are there approximate times as well?  Will be visiting Folkston during Easter week.  Any information appreciated.

An average of 3-4 unit trains (coal, phosphate, ethanol, grain) run through Folkston on a typical day.  They run as needed and can show up at anytime day or night.

The Nahunta Sub runs from Savannah to Jacksonville.  The Jesup Sub runs from Jesup, GA to Folkston via Waycross.  

North of Folkston, the Nahunta Sub sees the following trains:
Q031, Q032, Q037/39, Q038, P052, P053, P091, P092, P097, P098, sporadic coal trains and military movements

The Jesup Sub sees the following trains:
Q025, Q026, Q208, Q209, Q220, Q441, Q442, Q452, Q453, Q455, Q603, Q604, A764, ~3-4 unit trains

Altogether, there are about 25 train movements per 24-hours through Folkston on average.

Awesome info as always!

An average of 25 movements per day is much lower than the 60 or so from the Folkson Funnel of days gone by.

Did the the reduction in volume occur because of the following reasons:

• Implementation of PSR with longer heavier trains (seems like biggest reason)
• Fewer coals trains with powerplant conversion to natural gas or shutdown (permanent loss)
• Economic downtown from pandemic (should correct itself post-pandemic)
• Amtrak non-daly frequences on long distance trains (may correct itself in future)

I think the answers are yes, yes, yes, and yes. Also, reductions in OJ production killed the juice trains. And RBBB closed.

Yes.  Unit rock trains, that used to run on their own separate trains, have been combined with the manifest trains though Folkston.  Same goes with the autorack trains.  They're now combined with intermodal trains.  The Tropicana trains are now on manifest trains as well.

Yes.  Plants in Bostwick (Palatka) and Stanton (Orlando) are the only ones that still get regular deliveries of unit coal trains.  Big Bend (Tampa) gets them sporadically.  Other plants in Jacksonville, Crystal River, Gainesville, Lakeland, and Indiantown have either closed or will be / already have been converted to natural gas.  I believe the paper mills in Fernandina Beach and the cement plants  in Miami receive very sporadic coal trains.

That's a safe assumption.

Another big hit on traffic was the sale of the Tallahassee Sub to the Florida, Gulf & Atlantic.  All the Waycross - New Orleans trains are now routed via Manchester, GA and the Fitzgerald Sub.
