Paywalled, but I assume it says that the purchase of the Brevard branch ROW by Conserving Carolina that was announced several months ago will be completed in May.

When my parents first moved to Henersonville NC in 1981 a pair of GP38s were stationed there to work the branch, which had a large paper mill at the end of the line.
Very scenic and would make a great trail, but a better railroad!

The paper mill shut down in 2002. By 2011 nothing remained except its ground pollution. 

Great Smoky Mountain RR provides steam trains and is only 90 minutes from Brevard.
