Q165 Q166
Author: farmer

Hearing these have been put on alternating days. Q165 one day and Q166 the following day.
Can anyone confirm this?

Both are still scheduled daily.  Just this past week, Q166-31 and 29 were annulled.  Same goes with Q165-30 and 27.  I'm not sure if the annulments were because of CSX or CP (lack of crews, power, traffic, etc).

Today's Q166 was only @ 2-3 thousand feet.

I dont know if this effecting these trains, but the port of montreal has an ongoing labour dispute that has resulted in several shipping lines temporarily reducing/eliminating port calls there
Does any one know if these train carry a significant amount of marine containers originating in the port of montreal?

Ps, possibly someone on the Canadian board might have further information on these train's issues

I saw a CSX Q166 (ie CP 142) whiz by the North East live cam a few days back and it had 6-7 wells with mostly domestic cube containers (IIRC). I wouldn’t think domestic containers would be impacted by Port of Montreal labor issues. Plus don’t some of these containers go to Toronto? If volume doesn’t pick up, it’s not likely worth it to run a double stack train via CSX haulage rights when a dozen or so single stacked wells/spines could run on CP through the tunnel at Detroit. I don't know if it's related, but CP is extending at least occasionally the 142 train to Saint John to expedite outbound international containers.

Yesterday (April Fool's Day) Q165 had 106 boxes (no fooling!).  On Wednesday 3/31/21 he had 42 boxes.  Both were observed on the Virtual Railfan North East, PA cam.
As a comparison, yesterday Q169 (Port Newark, NJ to Chicago) had two engines and 7 (seven) international boxes, 24 axles total.  Needless to say, he had no trouble maintaining the 60 mph track speed.  About five hours later Q009 (Port Newark, NJ to Bedford Park (Chicago), ran with 3 three engines and 371 boxes (40' equivalants or 53'), 618 axles).

CP 143/142 are now extended to Saint John daily, though sometimes they have minimal Intermodal. CSX 165/166 are CP haulage trains west of Buffalo and are the extension of CP 143/142 respectively. CP has the contract to move Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk traffic landed at either the Port of Montreal or Saint John for all points in Canada, plus Chicago and Minneapolis in the US. Hapag-Lloyd has committed to move its Port of Montreal business to the Port of Saint John, but other than three test ships none of their ships have called at Saint John yet. Maersk hasn't announced a move yet, but is currently running some test ships where the Saint John is the first call, followed by Montreal. Ships calling at the Port of Montreal are required to have an Ice Rating, are limited in size, and can require the services of an Icebreaker. The Port of Saint John is ice free all year round.
