York Railway RJ-2 chase; 4/5/21
Author: bigsavage

Like its sister railroad, the Maryland Midland, York Railway is another busy shortline , now under Genesee & Wyoming ownership.
YKR runs the former Western Maryland York Sub between York, PA. and Porters, PA. with a short stretch of trackage rights on CSX's former WM Hanover sub.

After considerable switching in the former WM Lincoln Yard in West York, RJ-2 is under way @11:29 they will meet a YKR local just west of the yard, which handles the numerous accounts between West York, and Thomasville, PA.RJ-2s power is 2 x-SAL/SCL/CSX  GP16s, YKR has been buying x-CR GP15-1s to replace these 1950s units.
Just west of Market St. (Old US30)
South of Thomasville quarry, at KBS Road.

Approaching Spring Grove at Sprenkle Rd., RJ-2 will spend well over an hour switching the Pixelle paper mill.

RJ-2 will finally start moving west again @ 13:23, and is seen across the field near Menges Mills @ 13:42.
At 14:04, RJ-2 is on CSX trackage just west of Porters, and in another 2 miles will reach the Smith's Station siding , where interchange will be made.

At Smith's, another inbound GP15-1 is awaiting pickup, along with about 15 inbound freight cars.
The pickup is made by 14:40, and due to unfavorable light angles on the return to York, we end our chase here.
The house shown once served as the Smith's Station depot and agent's house.
Before leaving, we have an impromptu meeting of the 4 Western MD. Railway Historical Society members that have gathered here.

I can neither confirm nor deny my presence at said illicit meeting.
Luckily, for the balance of WMRHS members, four does not constitute a quorum for the transaction of business.

Great photo work and narrative.

Great photos! I live near the Indiana Southern which is also in the G&W fold and I really like the orange and black paint, although I do miss IS's Purdue black and gold with IU's red and cream paint colors (not so much the IU), but we get a good variety of other G&W power from time to time.

Excuse my ignorance, but if 1604 and 1606 are similar models, why are there four exhausts on 1604 and one and a half on 1606? The oil streaks running down the side of 1606 may point to an explanation. By the way, I really like the photos, all of them!

Is there an accurate roster somewhere detailing the history of those GP15-1s?

I did but generally don't consider them to be very accurate...

Really? They do a much better job than so many sites out there I know of.  I am on a loco info group with some of the toughest loco history trackers out there, and can verify the Diesel Shop admins are on there.

If you see something wrong and can back it up with hard data, say something.  They'll correct it.
