Blue Ridge Southern (3-30-21)
Author: JUTower

On our family vacation last week (to a rental cabin outside Asheville, NC) I was able to get out Tuesday 3-30 to try to chase Blue Ridge Southern's T-31 job from Canton to Asheville & return.  This is a fairly predictable run, taking cars predominantly from the giant Evergreen Packaging paper mill in Canton over to NS interchange in Asheville.
I got to Canton a bit past sunrise, here are a few quick looks around.
1 & 2. West side of Canton looking at the mill
3. T-59 local switching the yard then heading to Waynesville NC

4. Power at the engine servicing area
5. The crew fires up the consist of 3 SD40M-2's - three "flared" units built as SD45s originally.
6. The T-31 building its train in Canton

7. On the move east of Canton (drone photo)
8 & 9. Continuing eastbound. #9 was from the drone & all I could manage with the time - the train really moves!

10. Arriving Asheville, crossing the French Broad River
11. Westbound now with fresh woodchips, passing the Vulcan quarry west of Asheville (Candler)
12. Passing under the highway (US 23) headed towards Canton

13. Same trestle just east of Canton.  The grades are severe here - some sources say between 2.5 and 3.3! For the relatively short train those 645's were definitely working hard through here.
14 & 15. Arriving Canton, passing the T-59 crew and the giant complex at Canton

Hope you enjoyed - I know I sure did. At this point it was time to head back with the family.
Take care,
-Alex

Great shots!   Love to see matched SD45 (carbodies) running in 2021, especially pulling long strings of loaded chip cars!   Not much of that business left in the U.S. these days.

GGreat stuff.  #11 with the telephoto makes it look like a Saluda grade!
