Maryland Midland UBHF chase
Author: bigsavage

Tuesday, 4/20/21
Photos at many of the usual locations along the x-Western MD. RY. East Sub, plus a couple experiments with a wide-angle lens.
Cloud cover varied through the day, temps in the 70s.
First shot from a hill just east of Rocky Ridge, pulling hard on the short grade fom the Monocacy River up to Rocky Ridge.
After dodging road construction and waiting out switching in Thurmont, a wide angle view along MD 550 at Flint, MD.
Across the fields east of Sabillasville, many old ties recently replaced in this area.

Another wide angle view at the top of Sabillasville curve where a closed grade crossing was replaced in the 1930s by the current MD550 overpass.
CSX D-702 local waits on former WMRY Hanover Sub trackage at Highfield, MD. for UBHF to leave their train on a passing siding.
MMID meets CSX as UBHF will move west to Pen Mar to pick their inbound cars, this move is necessary as the length of the train would not fit on the sidings at Highfield.

MMID returns with its train while CSX backs up to the cars UBHF has delivered.
MMID will pull east onto the CSX Hanover Sub while CSX D702 does an air test, and then the 2 bedraggled CSX GEs will roll west back to Hagerstown.

Is this operation daily?  Five days a week?

Might want to come take a look.

After getting back on their own trackage, and an air test, UBHF heads back to Union Bridge.
Around newly cut Sabillasville curve.
Approaching Foxville-Deerfield Rd. at Lantz, MD.
Into Thurmont where 1 box will be left at NVR Home Products

After another dodge around road construction, another view just west of Rocky Ridge, MD.
An inactive spur to Glen-Gery Brick cuts across MD77 at this location, and there is a short, tough eastbound grade.

Final stop at Middleburg, MD., about 3 miles west of Union Bridge, UBHF rolls by the Donald Six mill complex, once a significant shipper.

Thanks again Bigsavage for your great photos and coverage of the Maryland Midland Railroad as they continue to work trains on the former Western Maryland main line.

FYI, UBHF currently runs Mon. through Fri.
Recommend being in Union Bridge by 9a.m.
Parking available behind red brick depot (WMRHS). Do not use lot behind MMID HQ across the street.
Train lengths, engines, and exact departure time change from day to day.
Beware road work on MD77 between Rocky Ridge-Thurmont.
MMID on 160.425, CSX local uses 160.230
