Eastern Railroad Discussion > When a One Hit Wonder Is a FailureDate: 04/22/21 17:03 When a One Hit Wonder Is a Failure Author: NB1001 What do you do when the single locomotive hauling your long, long road freight fails? The answer - not much. Just sit there until somebody in an office somewhere figures out a plan. This Canadian Pacific train hauled by the recently rebuilt 8178 running from the Belt Railway of Chicago to Windsor, Ontario could go no further, while running on rights on Norfolk Southern trackage. Crossings in Adrian Michigan were impassable due to the stopped train on April 17.
Precision Scheduled Railroading wasn't built with contingencies for the unexpected. Perhaps calling a crew and finding an engine is about a four hour delay for this train, and countless hours to other trains.

That is only a problem for the railroad industry if you want to run a passenger train. The delays they cause are intolerable.
