Author: ut-1

On April 28th, Adirondack Railroad ran its first work train of the season. To reach home rails, the Adirondack has trackage rights Utica-Remsen (Snow Junction) NY over the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern, 22.75 miles.

In this video, we watch the work train on Remsen Hill, Prospect, 18 miles north of Utica. The power: MA&N 2456 (ALCo C425 built 10/64), MA&N 805 (ALCo C425 built 10/64), Adirondack 1835 (MLW RS18u built 5/58) and Adirondack 1845 (MLW RS18u built 6/57).

The 21 gondolas contained new ties for placement Otter Lake northwards. The biggest part of this season's project will be the restoration of passenger service on the 44-mile section between Big Moose-Tupper Lake. Regrettably, the tracks between Tupper-Lake Placid have been lifted for a trail.

Why do these people who desire a trail have to have a rail line right-of-way?  OK, so why not just build the trail next to the rail line as has been accomplished in other places?  For example, along the former Western Maryland Main Line now operated by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and another example, along the Northern Central "Steam Into History" line up in Pennsylvania.  These rail lines co-exist with two very nice bike trails.  New York State needs to rethink this idea so that the scenic rail line can continue.
