"Red 'n Ready" Caboose on the Curve
Author: JPB

Kasgro Rail Lines caboose KRL 081 "Red 'n Ready" brings up the marker on an eastbound NS manifest as captured on the Horseshoe Curve Live cam at 1851 on Wednesday 5/5/21. Looks like KRL 081 was painted red within the past year as in May 2020, it was in a green livery.  That Geep probably remembers working with cabooses back in the day.

It's quite an event these days to see a caboose on a freight train!  About a year ago on the way home, I saw a NS train west of Manassas VA with a black caboose on the end.  I was driving and couldn't get a good look or photo but it appeared to have a Conrail logo on it.  Folks I talked to believed it to be a "rider" caboose due to cargo just ahead of it, IIRC on a depressed center flatcar.

Cheers,
Jim

That's awesome. I can't remember the last time I saw a caboose on The Curve

Why we have seen some cabooses in action these days? Are they coming back to operations?

No. This caboose is used for riders following high value or high and wide shipments.

Put VIP type customers at the end of a train?  I thought the big reason for doing away with the li'l fellas, especially at the tail end of trains.  If they're dangerous for trained and experienced crew the experience ought to be pretty wild for someone out of a business office!

It's likely a ferry move to get it in position somewhere. The types of loads that usually need riders are often run as a special train.
