An afternoon on/around Sand Patch.PA.
Author: bigsavage

Yesterday was my first visit to this area in almost 5 years.
Although the weather seemed to change about every 10 minutes, we netted 4 CSX trains and made time to visit a couple of other interesting places.
First up was eastbound intermodal Q138, seen here in Meyersdale, Keystone crossing on the west slope, and its DPU passing the only B&O era building left at Sand Patch itself.

Q136 is seen here coming and going eastbound at Yoder, midway between Meyersdale and Garrett, PA.
In B&O steam years, a large coaling dock stood here.
Q136 then approaches the summit at Sand Patch, a surprise would come up behind us...

Westbound Q015 meets Q136 at the summit.

Back to Meyersdale in time to get a short eastbound autorack (Q216?) blasting uphill past the old B&O station, used still by MOW.

We also checked out the Shaw mine loadout and were surprised to see a loaded train ready to be taken to the main line, but no crew was in sight.
The loading tipple, located south of Meyersdale in the village of Romania, is a simple affair stradding the single track, which once was the B&O Salisbury branch that extended about another 8 miles south to an interchange with the shortline Castleman River RR. The branch now ends about 1.5 miles south of the tipple.

A brief visit was also made to the former Meyersdale Western Maryland RWY. depot, now the Meyersdale Historical Society HQ and a visitor's center for the GAP Trail, many trail users were seen.
The depot has historical exhibits, gift shop, model trains, restrooms, and is free.

Thanks for all the photos Bigsavage and especially the train with the caboose, still looking in good shape.

Those Meyersdale shots, both Q138 and the auto racks, are nice.
Glad you included the Shaw Mines loadout/Salisbury Branch in your post.
