BNSF used that tactic at various times to keep traffic moving.  One time I remember was when the Orin Sub in Wyoming started sinking into the mud, and the flow of coal was impacted while the track was upgraded.  Rather than explain why the national power grid was affected, BNSF simply applied money to continue sufficient operations.   Along with boosting pay for conductors and engineers to remain available, stored locomotives and coal cars were activated, and the crisis was averted.   Perhaps CSX is using the same actions.  BSB

Over the past six years, the Class 1 railroads have axed 33% of their workers through layoffs and attrition. According to the Surface of Transportation Board (STB), the Class 1 railroads slashed their headcount from 174,000 workers in April 2015 to 116,000 workers in June 2021. The results of efforts to hire people back this year are barely visible. Turns out, it’s a lot easier to cut workers than it is to suddenly hire workers.

“No way did I or anybody else in the last six months realize how difficult it was going to be to try and get people to come to work these days,” said CSX CEO James Foote during CSX’s earnings conference call for the second quarter of 2021.

Foote already knows that when you treat people like dirt, they have no loyalty to the company.  Then you cut a bunch of them, and their response is:  screw you!  WE are not working for the railroad, or any other  company that treats us so poorly.  CSX has no one to blame but themselves.  They shot themselves in the "foote."

Don't you just love how "No one wants to work anymore" is being spun these days?

No Dude, they don't want to work for A$$holes. You scrapped them to maximize shareholder value, and you expect them to come crawling back when you snap your fingers?

Food service industry folks are shocked that folks don't want to work long hours and put up with screaming Karens for serf wages.

States cutting unemployment benefits didn't get people back to work, study finds

There is truth to that statement.

Restaurants in St Augustine FL are offering over $20 an hour plus tips and can't fill jobs.  They are also getting complaints from customers on the new prices required to support such wages.

Lets see what happens when people have to a actually pay their rent.

$20 plus tips is way more than the going rate here in South Florida. $12 to $15 plus tips is more like it. At that scale, restaurants have their pick of good experienced people.

Offering tipped minimum wage plus tips, many restaurants are hurting.

Labor is now making choices. Take it or leave it isn't a strategy for management.

To me that means that in Saint Augustine, Florida $ 20 an hour plus tips is not enough for the true market rate for that kind of employment. From a thousand miles away, I don't suppose the going rate for housing is astronomical?

Adam Smith had wisdom about what to do in a supply shortage. Apparently some folks don't think that wisdom should apply to labor.

To me from 10 miles away, it is more than enough to make ends meet.  You can't make people work, especially if they don't have to worry about rent payments.

if $20 per hr plus tips jobs are not in demand, here is how i see it:  people have choices to work at other higher paying jobs OR people have access to some sort of OTHER income that pays their rent and bills..........

You currently don't have to pay the rent.  There is a moratorium on being kicked out for not paying the rent currently.

You do understand that rent isn't the only thing people use money for, right?

Thanks for pointing that out.  For the most part, housing should be the biggest monthly expense out of the budget.  Without having to worry about paying rent, the unemployment checks go much farther.   You do understand those basic economics, right?

So. . . No, you don't then. Check.

Right....I guess reading is a skill you have yet to master.  Do that before taking on economics.

Reality is that Florida cut off the extra benefits effective June 31st.

How come Florida is still having problems with "Essential" Jobs going begging?
