The wind turbine blades that CSX recently handled were unloaded in a purpose built lay down lot in the Keyser, WV rail yard. Yesterday some of the blades were loaded on to purpose built trailers for final delivery to the Pinnacle Wind Farm project. 

Getting out of the lay down yard on to the highway involves swinging the rear of the trailer around the Memorial Bridge pier near the old B&O station. That movement swings the tip of the blade out over the east yard lead and #2 main on the Mountain Sub..... a move coordinated with CSX employees.

1) Loaded blade coming along side of the B&O station. A low wall was removed during construction of the lay down yard to give clearance between the station and the east lead.

2) A blade swinging around the bridge pier.

3) Tip of the blade swinging out over the yard lead and #2 main....... and yes, that is CSX #911 in the background.

Great sequence of photos! - I'm curious if coordination with CSX employees involved getting a track warrant for mainline foul time? Thanks.

Very interesting post. Sure looks like they would need to get foul time to make that move. Whacking that blade with a loco would be an expensive proposition. Tough on the train crew too.

Fascinating transition, from what was basically a coal train yard to a facility now handling wind turbine blades.

Great photos of that wind turbine blade. Gives you an idea just how big they are. Tim, in photo #1 I think I see the red nose of the CSXT #811. Any idea of where it is going ?

Nice shots of the yard and movement.  Looks like there is a nice mural there too.

It was part of the DP units on a westbound loaded drag going to the Mt. Storm Power Station....
 

Very Cool Stuff Tim !  That's quite a bit of tight clearances to deal with. Looks like the trailing wheelsets can be steered remotely. Do they have far to go ? Must be a real challenge to get around those curvy West Virginia roads and up on the sides of those hills.

The only thing missing is a signal with a green aspect in harmony with one of the pictures..........green is good, regardless what is transiting over the tracks!
