Hamlet NC
Author: mully

Made a swing down by Hamlet after going over to Candor. Had not been to Hamlet in a few years and with the hump closed it was what I expected which was not much. Lots of engines in storage. There does look like some kind of huge place was built across RT.1 from the yard that had lots of covered hoppers. Saw one train leave going toward Wilmington with Nothing but aggregate cars, anyone know where this goes?

How many trains are through town a day now?

Any coal go this way now?

Thanks
Gary

Occasional coal/hopper trains still pound the diamond at Hamlet. As far as the number of trains, it's less then half of what it was pre PSR. You'll get 20 on a really good day now.

The coal traffic to Florida should be way down.

Plus, nearly all of the coal traffic for Florida originates in Western Kentucky or Southern Indiana and wouldn't run through Hamlet.

I don't remember any coal traffic for Florida moving through Hamlet anyhow.  When Florida bound coal was running out of WV and eastern KY, it ran down the Clinchfield to Spartanburg, not across the former SAL to Hamlet.

The most common coal moves remaining through Hamlet are the N904 Pennyroyal, SC trains that originate in IN and IL.  I'd say there are a couple of Pennyroyal loads and empties per week through Hamlet.

Thanks. There aren't many coal fired electric plants left in Florida.

Do Q037/038/039 and Q491/492 operate via the S-Line thru Fairfax or A-Line via Dillon?
Thanks
Andy

Not a single through-train between Atlanta and Hamlet. CSX would move any such cars, including Mobile or New Orleans traffic, via Waycross. The Hamlet yard would probably have gone the way of Tilford in Atlanta, except for the fact that there's no demand for real estate in Hamlet.

Q582 and 583 do run through Atlanta via the Abbeville and W&A subs.

Yeah and they never came through Hamlet so why did you even mention them?

Cayce, SC traffic is also handled via Savannah and Waycross instead of Hamlet.  When the Hamlet hump was active, there used to be the Hamlet - Cayce pair Q463 / Q464.  Today, that traffic is handled by the Cayce - Savannah pair F756 / F794.  That leaves the Amtrak Silver Star pair the only scheduled trains to use the Hamlet Sub south out of Hamlet.

So no freight on the line from Hamlet to Cayce?

Besides Q582 / Q583, does the line through to Atlanta host any unit trains, such as grain, coke, ethanol, sulfur, or potash?  Does the line see any military specials moving to and from Wilmington?  How about a robust local business?

In certain lanes, CSX seems to be consolidating its loose carload business only as far as the PSR model allows, while still doing pretty well with various unit trains.

There's a local that works the south end of this segment.  I think it works as far north as McBee, SC.  There is no freight on the line from that local's northern working limit to Hamlet.

There is a fellow who goes by MBMARS who has a YouTube channel. He posts videos of the Abbeville sub periodically.

Based on what I’ve seen in his videos, in addition to Q582/583; there is also a manifest pair on this line operating between Nashville and I think Greenwood. Can’t recollect what the symbol is for them but, perhaps Andrew can weigh in with that info.

There are also regular grain trains and an occasional military movement. The YouTube videos also show a local that I believe comes out of Athens, GA.

Aggregate train would have been W542.  This train runs 2-3 times a week from quarry near Sanford on the Aberdeen Sub to Wilmington.  It's empty counterpart returns as W642. There is a W642-17 out running right now - shows tentative ETA out of Hamlet at 1430 today if you are still in the neighborhood.  Probably run back out of Sanford Saturday as W542-21.

The Aberdeen Sub north of Hamlet sees the aforementioned P092 and F742 northbound, P091 and F741 southbound daily, plus the as needed W542/W642 trains and a host of loaded grain trains to, empty grain trains from the ACWR in Aberdeen.
